In ‘Oliver Twist’, Dickens mixes grim realism, and merciless satire as a way to describe the effects of industrialism on 19th-century England and to criticise the harsh new Poor Laws. Oliver, an innocent child, is trapped in a world where his only alternatives seem to be the workhouse, Fagin’s thieves, a prison or an early grave. From this unpromising industrial/institutional setting, however, a fairy tale also emerges: In the midst of corruption and degradation, the essentially passive Oliver remains pure-hearted; he steers away from evil when those around him give in to it; and, in proper fairy-tale fashion, he eventually receives his reward – leaving for a peaceful life in the country, surrounded by kind friends. On the way to this happy ending, Dickens explores the kind of life an orphan, outcast boy could expect to lead in 1830’s London.
One of the best Shirley Temple movies! This is a great film to watch with the entire family.

After living a coddled life in India, pretty Sara Crewe goes off to boarding school in England while her father goes to fight the Boer War for his Queen. Though she gets pleasure from the interest of tutor Miss Rose and the good-looking riding tutor who is wooing the teacher, Sara abhors unbending headmistress Miss Minchin. When Sara’s father is reported among the dead, the headmistress coerces the girl to become a servant and stay in the attic.
But adorable scullery maid Becky and a kind-hearted Indian man next door make Sara’s life bearable while she seeks out for her father, whose death she repudiates to admit. Though she gets in difficulty for escaping her chores, the little princess dreams of a better life as she haunts the veteran’s hospital, hoping for a marvel. In the end, her resilience pays off. This is a great film to watch with the entire family.

25 December 1942

One night in Metropolis, the night watchman from the Metropolis Munitions Plant is found dead in a swamp. When news of the incident reaches the city the next morning, Lois Lane and Clark Kent both decide to grab the story for themselves. Lois decides to go undercover at the plant. As she goes to meet with the plant supervisor, she meets the new night guard, a kindly, white-haired, old man.

Lois goes undercover as a factory worker. One day, during her shift, she overhears the foreman telling several of the workers that Mr. Jones, one of the supervisors, wants to go over the plan. During break time, the workers head up to Mr. Jones’ office. Lois follows. Up in the office, Lois overhears Mr. Jones’ plan to blow up the factory. The switch to the factory’s night lights has been rigged to a case of dynamite. When the night guard throws the switch, the whole factory will explode. Just then, Mr. Jones sees Lois outside the office window. He sends the workers to catch her. Lois manages to get away from the workers, but is caught by the foreman. The night guard enters the room and rushes to help Lois. The foreman stops the night guard by dropping several tons of scrap metal on him.

To silence Lois, the workers load her into a test torpedo with another case of dynamite. (As a company rule, test torpoedoes aren’t loaded with explosives.) The torpedo with Lois is sent to the testing range and set to be fired at a dummy ship. Back inside the factory, the night guard is struggling to free himself from the rubble. The night guard is really Clark, who has also decided to go undercover. Under the rubble, Clark changes into Superman.

As the test torpedo is fired, Clark rushes out to the testing range and saves Lois before the torpedo explodes. Realizing that they’ve been discovered, Mr. Jones orders the foreman to throw the night guard’s switch now. He reaches the switch, but Superman stops him from throwing it. Just when Mr. Jones thinks his plans are ruined, he spots a truck loaded with dynamite. He steers the truck toward the factory in a collision course, then jumps out before impact. Lois warns Superman, who was previously pinned down by the workers, about the truck. Superman catches the truck and sends it over a cliff, saving the factory.

300 years after previously erupting scientists from the Bureau of Meteorology are studying Mt. Monokoa’s alarming new tremors. Back in the city, Lois and Clark are assigned the story and provided press passes and steamship tickets. At the island, Clark finds his pass missing since Lois has hidden it. While she takes a cable car to the crater’s top, Clark tries to get a new pass in the island’s city. At the summit, a scientist tells Lois they’ll use a blast and hope to deflect a lava flow. The volcano begins erupting and a cable car cannot get to the top to rescue Lois. Falling rocks cause damage and break the blast wire. In the city below, Clark changes to Superman and is stunned when he deflects a huge flaming boulder. Lois climbs along the cable to its car, where a revived Superman saves her, and then the cable car. He leaves Lois safely at the harbor and then repairs the blast wire. The blast works and saves the city. Later in the steamship back home, while Lois types her story, Clark finds his missing pass in her purse.
The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical / fantasy film directed mainly by Victor Fleming from a script by Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, Edgar Allan Woolf, and others and based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

The film follows 12-year-old farmgirl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who lives on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, but dreams of a better place “somewhere over the rainbow.” After being struck unconscious during a tornado by a window which has come loose from its frame, Dorothy dreams that she, her dog Toto and the farmhouse are transported to the magical Land of Oz. There, the Good Witch of the North, Glinda ,advises Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and meet the Wizard of Oz, who can return her to Kansas. During her journey, she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), who join her, hoping to receive what they lack themselves (a brain, a heart and courage, respectively). All of this is done while also trying to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and her attempt to get her sister’s ruby slippers from Dorothy, who received them from Glinda.

The film was first telecast in 1956, but not repeated until 1959. But from 1959 to 1991, The Wizard of Oz was an annual television tradition in the United States and through these showings, it has become one of the most famous films ever made. It is still shown on television; although, beginning in 1991, it began to be telecast more often than simply once a year. The film received much more attention after its annual television screenings were so warmly embraced and has since become one of the most beloved films of all time. The Library of Congress names The Wizard of Oz as the most-watched film in history.

The film starts with an image of the front page of the Daily Planet, reporting the shipment of a billion dollars of gold to the US mint. A train is being loaded with hundreds of bars of gold, guarded by several armed police officers. Further ahead, in a passenger coach, Lois Lane boards with help from Clark Kent, who says he wishes he could come, but he has another story to cover. As the last of the gold is loaded, a car a few hundred yards away turns on its lights, and the men inside put on robbers’ masks and arm themselves. The mysterious car follows the train……

The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles.

The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a ’sustaining show’ (i.e., it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the dramatic effect. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated.
