Oliver, an innocent child, is trapped in a world where his only alternatives seem to be the workhouse, Fagin’s thieves, a prison or an early grave. From this unpromising industrial/institutional setting, however, a fairy tale also emerges: In the midst of corruption and degradation, the essentially passive Oliver remains pure-hearted; he steers away from evil when those around him give in to it; and, in proper fairy-tale fashion, he eventually receives his reward – leaving for a peaceful life in the country, surrounded by kind friends. On the way to this happy ending, Dickens explores the kind of life an orphan, outcast boy could expect to lead in 1830′s London.

One of the best Shirley Temple movies! This is a great classic movie to watch with the entire family.

After living a coddled life in India, pretty Sara Crewe goes off to boarding school in England while her father goes to fight the Boer War for his Queen. Though she gets pleasure from the interest of tutor Miss Rose and the good-looking riding tutor who is wooing the teacher, Sara abhors unbending headmistress Miss Minchin. When Sara’s father is reported among the dead, the headmistress coerces the girl to become a servant and stay in the attic.

But adorable scullery maid Becky and a kind-hearted Indian man next door make Sara’s life bearable while she seeks out for her father, whose death she repudiates to admit. Though she gets in difficulty for escaping her chores, the little princess dreams of a better life as she haunts the veteran’s hospital, hoping for a marvel. In the end, her resilience pays off.

Frank Baum.

The film follows 12-year-old farmgirl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who lives on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, but dreams of a better place “somewhere over the rainbow.” After being struck unconscious during a tornado by a window which has come loose from its frame, Dorothy dreams that she, her dog Toto and the farmhouse are transported to the magical Land of Oz. There, the Good Witch of the North, Glinda ,advises Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and meet the Wizard of Oz, who can return her to Kansas. During her journey, she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), who join her, hoping to receive what they lack themselves (a brain, a heart and courage, respectively). All of this is done while also trying to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and her attempt to get her sister’s ruby slippers from Dorothy, who received them from Glinda.

The film was first telecast in 1956, but not repeated until 1959. But from 1959 to 1991, The Wizard of Oz was an annual television tradition in the United States and through these showings, it has become one of the most famous films ever made. It is still shown on television; although, beginning in 1991, it began to be telecast more often than simply once a year. The film received much more attention after its annual television screenings were so warmly embraced and has since become one of the most beloved films of all time. The Library of Congress names The Wizard of Oz as the most-watched classic movie in history.

The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles.

The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a ‘sustaining show’ (i.e., it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the dramatic effect. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated.

Two circus performers and martial artists are sent to deliver a trunk full of gold to a town experiencing famine and a siege of marauders. The marauders, of course, are waiting for them around every corner and they are besieged at each step. As much time is taken up with very entertaining and fast paced fight scenes as plot exposition. The writer also added elements of romantic tension and some vaguely historical political references to lend the film a little more interest and complexity than the genre norm. The romantic element is never tedious and gives the characters more depth than those of more typical martial arts action films.

In true Art-Imitates-Life fashion, Mickey Rooney plays returning GI Andy Hardy, who arrives in his home town of Carvel to the open arms of his family: Father Judge Hardy (Lewis Stone), mother Mrs. Hardy (Fay Holden) and Aunt Milly (Sara Haden).

This was the final film of the original Andy Hardy series and is a great family picture and a must see for all Mickey Rooney fans.
